We were so close. So, so, so close. The release date for "The Sims 3" has been pushed back from February 20 to June 2, 2009. I will try to look at this from a positive point of view. Maybe it means less bugs. BetaNews is reporting the delay is so EA can work on building more hype. Not the greatest reason if you ask me. Gamespot also has news that an executive said they want to spend more time on marketing.
I want the game now. If it's done, release it. Trust us, EA. If the game is good we'll spread the word.
Update: A commenter (thanks Camille!) found an online petition to get EA to change the date back. As much as I wish it would work, I don't see EA changing their mind on this one. I still don't understand why it needs more hype when "The Sims 2" series has sold over 100 million copies. Let's just hope this doesn't turn into another "Spore" where the release date keeps getting pushed back.
Update: iPhone, Mac, and PC versions will be released on the same day. UK release date for "The Sims 3" is June 5.

I agree with you, I think this is a bad move for EA! I’ve had this game pre-ordered and I’m pretty mad that now I have paid for a game that I’m not going to get for four months! I think that a lot of people will be canceling those orders. Money is too tight right now and people are going to find other things they want to spend that on, rather than wait that long for a game. I want my Sims!
I cant believe they made such a fuss about this game being released in feb and are now pushing it back by months – we havent even been given a reason why! If this game is not released in feb it is one i will not be buying especially if they do not give a reason why as then the consumer will have no choice but to believe it is to create more hype, therefore going to p*ss off the true sims fans, if a fan sees this in the stores they will buy it even if they had no clue it was going to be released. I think this is so stupid, ive been waiting for ages for this to come out and it was coming out just before my birthday so i didn’t have to save up for it, now i proberlly won’t buy the game for ages after it comes out as I will have better things to spend with my money. The whole point I pre-ordered the game was to play none stop just before uni starts back up on the 26th Feb. Now the game will come out when my finals are on. When will there be time to play it then?
Where did it say that they wanted to release it just to build hype? I am so angry at EA if that’s the case. They have already put me through literally 4 days of e-mail tech support to get bf2142 working and their internet interface is horrid (with all the different user names for each game BLAGH).

I pre-ordered this game 2 months ago and have been eagerly awaiting it’s release. Now I have to wait 4 more months?? Screw that I’m returning the game! Stupid EA Idiots; as usual they make a good game and epically fail to do anything with it.
Summer?! In a tough economy, and schools out and the weather turns green and everyone want to travel and be outdoors… who in their right mind changes a release date to compete with that?! Winter time you appreciate a game that is great for killing time when it’s cold outside…but where are your prospective customers gonna be when June hits?! Vacation, camping, boating, hiking, BBQ’s, and all sorts of other activities. If it comes down to $50 for a video game or a concert, I’ll be at the concert. EA can hope to get my sale NEXT winter if this is how they want to play it. They can take all the extra “buzz” they build in the delay and stick it!
I can’t believe they’re doing this, right at the very month that the game was set to be released! The unfairness of it is baffling; dangling it in front of our noses and then snatching it away at the last second. I do understand everyone’s frustration about the release date being changed from Feb to June. It is very upsetting, I have been playing the Sims since Sims 1 came out and I also have been looking forward to the new release but the economy is bad right now and EA might have had to layoff developers or people who prepare the games for shipment and its harder on those people than us waiting for the game to come out, they will be stuck without a job. Ok so people are saying they saved $50 for the game… go to a bank and open a passbook savings account and in the five months you’re waiting for the game to come out earn some interest… It maybe only some change but… a penny saved is a penny earned, put your money to use for yourself.

I have to agree. I heard about Sims 3 last week and was so excited to be able to get it this month. By June I will have lost interest and completely FORGOTTEN about buying it….unless I remember to set a calendar event but even then….who’s to say I will still be as excited about it then? What if I lose my job between now and June? I won’t be dropping 50.00 bucks on a video game.

I wasn’t planning on buying the Sims 3 for a while because I am still really playing into the Sims 2. But a delay like this is really bad for business. As one person pointed out, in June people are going to be busy with summer activities and not really have any time to play an involved game like The Sims 3. I don’t know if anyone from EA Games reads these comments. But if they do, you should really consider what your loyal gamers saying and release the game on or around its original release date. I don’t see how delaying it four more months would “build the hype” up more. I think the buzz is generating as much as it can for the game. So release it already!!

Look everyone. I’m as upset as the rest of up about this, but at least they might be improving it. I am pretty sad that I’m not gonna get it on my b-day, but maybe I’ll just get it as an achievement prize. I know your all pretty upset about this. Everyone who is mad about this delay: petitions and words will do NOTHING! Do you really think the petition will even make it to anyone important? Even if it miraculously somehow does, so what? So they see that 1000 people (some of whom aren’t even guaranteed to be real) have signed something online, and that’s only 1000 out of thousands upon thousands of more customers willing to to do whatever they can to get their paws on the game.
What you REALLY need to do is show them with your MONEY that you are upset. Cancel your pre-order and WAIT to buy it. SHOW THEM why this is a bad move, because saying why does nothing if they’re still making a huge profit. After all, why should they care about the customers being angry when those same customers are still purchasing their product without a second thought?
Yes, I know you really want to play, but keeping your pre-orders and buying it as soon as it comes out only says, “Yeah, I don’t care at all that it was delayed.” And, guess what? They will continue to do this in the future unless they see that it’s not making them any money. If you’re mad about this but you want to just continue to sign meaningless petitions and comments on sites the big shots have probably never even heard of yet you’re still going to pre-order/buy this game right when it comes out, then fine. Go ahead and tell them with your money that you’re perfectly okay with them delaying the game, because that’s all they’ll hear. If you really want to do something about it, cancel your pre-orders and wait to buy the game. Spread word and convince other people to do the same thing.
I’m not saying you never have to buy the game, but if EA sees that their little “hype” delay has backfired on them, they will be more hesitant about doing something like that in the future to their other games. Sadly, I don’t see it backfiring on them at all, because I just know that a lot of players either don’t know how to speak with their money or they’re just impatient and, even if they swear in caps and say they’re mad, they ultimately don’t really care in the end as long as they get their game.

If there were a a way to get this petition to all the Sims fans globally then it wouuld be 8 million strong.
In marketing it is an acheivable goal to reach only about 5% of your target audience. That being said, 1200 + signatures represents only 5% of the potential petitioners, who through either laziness or not knowing about the said petition cant sign it.
EA knows the statistics of marketing analisis and knows that 1200 signatures represents tens of thousands of poeples views.
So everyone keep signing and spreading the word, because it will have a valid effect when it falls into EA’s hands.
I dont think J knows much about marketing or marketing stradegy. I do however agree with you J on cancelling our pre-orders. This will indeed send a big message to EA.

The Sims 3 delay was the final straw for me… I canceled my pre-order and wrote an email to EA letting them know how pissed of I am about the delay and that I canceled my pre-order and have suggested that others buying the game do the same.
I’d love to have the game, but with a summer release, by the time I’ll have time to play it (and not working on my real house) it’s going to be February again…
At least then they may have it combined with an expansion, making it a deluxe which will be a better deal.

i this its bs i reordered the game when it said it would ship on the 16th i should have it this week but no when i went to check the status of my sims 3 collectors edition it said it doesnt ship till june 2nd and i wont get until june 3-10 since i paid for 2-3 days shipping spent over 80 bucks on this game and cant play it till june now they need to just ship it and forget about how to market the damn thing!!! its paid for and everything they shouldnt have put it back 4m thats ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t know if anyone that matters will actually see my comment on that petition or not, but I feel better having said it. I have seen numerous quotes by various EA developers about how loyal the fanbase is, and how much they appreciate us. This really stinks. I have all the sims 2 games and i can’t wait for it to come out! I didn’t find out until last night (release date for sims 3 in wal-mart)and it wasn’t there. At first I thought it was all sold out so i went to another store and then it wasn’t there either. I was so sad. I was waiting and I had a choice of even going to new hampshire for the weekend with my friend but i was so excited that sims 3 was comeing out i had to say no. I don’t know what the EA team was thinking they were problay not thinking at all!

I was ready to buy the game today and now I have to wait 4 months?!?!?! Thanks a lot for crushing my hopes and ruining my day.
So I called game stop today so I could know if I could pick up the Sims 3 today, the copy which I bought over a month ago, I didn’t just put a deposit on it. I bought the game. And It was the Collectors Edition, so you know that was about $80. The guy tells me that the date was moved to June 2nd over a month ago. I then went on to the SIM 3 site where I’m a VIP member. And it said that they didn’t announce the re-release till February 3rd. That is 17 days before the release date.
This is what it said:
“The June launch combined with the breakthrough game the team is building gives us the perfect runway to create awareness for The Sims 3,” said Russell Arons, Vice President of Marketing for EA. “The Sims 3 will be the original IP summer blockbuster of 2009 as we build off the success of the best-selling PC franchise of all time to create awareness with both loyal Sims fans and new players.”
SO basically they said it was cause they want to increase the hype. Nothing about new bugs found in the game. I just got back from Game Stop and I got my $80 something dollars back. Maybe I’ll buy the game next February, at least by then their will probably be an expansion pack. Unless of course they haven’t released the Sims # by then. You know.. cause they have to increase the hype and all.

I only wish the game would be available through STEAM. I noticed EA is adding many of their titles here because STEAM is very convenient! Im just waiting for the SIM series to reach it. Maybe that could be part of the delay? If you dont know what STEAM is check out steampowered.com
I went to buy this game yesterday after months of waiting, only to find out they postponed the release date to june. I am soo angry. This is like teasing a dog with a steak and not letting it have it.
Um June? I doubt it. I knew they’d push the date back as soon as they said February. It’s practically EA’s motto on the sims. I’m hoping for Christmas, MAYBE, but I’m not counting on it.

I am quite young to be playing Sims but I like playing it and yesterday I went to see if they had Sims 3 yet. They didn’t. And I was looking forward to this for so long! I can’t believe they changed the date. I want the game now. I am not demanding but I like the Sims games and it just crushed me when I heard that It is not going to be in stores untill June 2nd. Argh, you all must know how I’m feeling right now as you can relate— First of all, its bull to hold it off the shelves if its done. I just reserved my copy yesterday because everyone was having this big SIMS party at the store. I got home, checked this morning and found the dates changed. Store in town is so mad they are considering not selling it there because of angry sims fans/customers. If their business hurts of this I wouldn’t be surprised of upcoming legal threats. Its craziness here! Me & my family were so excited. Totally bummed out.
I have been waiting for mounths, and the thing is in my nearest game store it sed that it was coming out on the 20th of feb, when i said that it was coming out in june the store had no clue…I know someone who works in EA, i asked him why they heald the sims 3 back and he apologised and said i can just ask him for any sims 2 game in any format i want. I want the sims and i cant save my money for 4 EXTRA months! I watched the trailers and was really looking forward to the new create a sim…you can change the root colour of the hair, tips and main section with like GREEN and give them hightlights! I agree and i disagree. Yeah it hardcore sucks that they pushed back the date, but if your so bad with your money that you cant save the funds for FOUR MONTHS then maybe you shouldnt be wasting it on a computer game in the first place. If anything, that allows you more time to get the funds. If you care enough to sign a petition to force a company to put their product out in the market before they are willing to, which by their own god given rights are allowed to push back the date if they want, then you should be able to care enough to save that measley, what, 60 bucks in your freakin piggy bank. I think it very stupid that they would do that I got had it preorder for my X-mas present and now they move the date so that its coming out on my B-day.

i think this is kinda dumb, i’m not going to lie. I was waiting for my copy to be delivered to my home for over a week now; only to find out today it isn’t coming until two days before my birthday! this is in three months. i understand it may have some techinical difficulties, but three months?!

Its March 6th which is 2 weeks past the Feb 20th (so called) release. EA has us all by the balls cuz they know we are addicted to the game, so I think they really dont give a crap. Wow, guys, just wow. It does suck that the date’s been pushed back but honestly, it’s four months. I think you can all find something to do for four months and if you can’t, that’s just really sad.
I told everyone that the date was Feb. 20th, and so when feb 20th rolled around, there were no Sims 3…so I did my research and come to find out the release date is June 2nd!!! By then, I’ll be on vacation…but I guess I’ll have to b patient and just wait..but EA shouldn’t have done that, saying they need to build up the hype..the hype has been blazing for the last year and a half!!! I understand why EA is pushing the date back to gain more hype. You have to have so much in order to have confidence in your product, and just because people have bought over 100 million copies of the Sims 2 game and expansions, that doesn’t mean they will necessarily buy The Sims 3. With more time to think it over, more people will change their mind and pre-order the game. At first, I wasn’t going to get it because I figured it will be just like Sims 2 and eventually they will stop making it, but I have been stewing since February on whether or not I really wanted it, and I just pre-ordered it last week. It’s not the end of the world, they will likely release in late May once they see how miffed people are.
I was unemployed and really hoping to spend my days playing the game! But, I suppose it is better to have a job and be able to afford buying it when it comes out late, than to be unemployed.
I’m all for whining about the delay and all that, but I’ve read too many comments of people saying “If it’s not out NOW, I’ll NEVER buy it!” But why retaliate to a 4 month delay by not getting it at all? That basically says to EA “well we’re not going to buy it then… or ever… so don’t bother for the many who still want it, because they aren’t important, we are!”
I’m still super excited about it, I check the site every week to see the new updates and I watch the videos and read the information repeatedly, because although I’ve read it once on the site, there’s a fan site that puts it differently so I’ll read it there too. I even have the count down widget on my livejournal! (something I don’t even use that often, I just wanted the widget!).
Sure, I think they’re a bit poo for delaying it, and I feel bad for those of you who had to pay to preorder (I used play.com a UK site where they basically take the money when they ship the item, cause they’re lovely like that). And fine, get your refund, but is there really any reason you can’t still buy it when it does come out? And if you forget, what about when that glorious advert comes on TV and says “Available in Store NOW!” will you not turn to your biological money holder and go “do we have the money for that? can you get it for me? It’s about damned time! I’ll REALLY enjoy this!”

Now honestly, I give props to all the people who said they will wait to buy it or not buy it. I am one of those people, and I have aleady stopped at least 5 of my friends from buying the game. We are not saying the people who are actually buying the game are not important or that we are more important, we are just letting EA know our frusteration at them. So Tori, please do not say that as you are making a generalization.
I stopped checking out all of the information EA posted a week after the delay, I honestly decided that what they were going to give us would be trash, EA has a way of doing that. The only good information you can get is from places like Snooty and even that stopped ages ago. I have more important things to do with my time and sadly the delay has helped me realize that.
Instead of buying the game I decided to put my money towards a new computer something that will play The Sims 3 well, I will just mod that game to death. Seventy-five dollars is a lot, even fifty dollars is a lot. I would rather use it to buy something that will benefit me more than having a game to play.
The Sims Website got me so mad, they just gave us this dumb little widget and a video. Then they came up with the creator camp crap, something I really dislike. The devolopers shot themselves in the foot. It was like they were trying to put a bandaid on a gunshot wound, it wouldn’t work. The only thing that kept people wanting to buy the game was that it was different. If it had been based upon their actions and not the actual game, very few in my opinion would have bought the game.
As far as the actual game itself, it looks like rubbish. The graphics are terrible and look worse than The Sims 2. The cars look decent, but still nothing that a bit of custom content from The Sims 2 could have done. I am also very dissappointed at the lack of being able to add custom content to the game, it gets me very mad as I used to make custom skins, clothing, and a lot of things all the time and I will now not be able to do that.
I am not cutting off my nose to spite my face thank you very much, I am being smart with my money and putting it to something that I will actually enjoy, rather than something that I wold have enjoyed months ago. I will not suffer whilist everyone is uploading in the Exchange, rather I will be HAPPY that I spent my money on something better than a ’stupid game’. I have not been waiting for this for over a year, I have been waiting for this experience for over a year. The experience that I realized game devolopers are just greedy people who want money and don’t care about their customers and that my life DOES NOT revolve around a game and when I get that sucked into it that I get this upset, I need to shape up my life.
On a final note guess what? Even if EA goes out of business another company will pick up The Sims series. The series is too popular and worth a lot of money so they will defnently be bought out. Gamers, digital designers, and story tellers will not be mad when they see it made by another company, rather relieved that The Sims is in BETTER HANDS.

I can guess that they still are lying about the hype thing. Obviously, (and this is really what I think) they want to sell it during the beginning of summer because that’s when everyone has break so therefore they will actually have time to play it, not just the huge fans but all sims players.
Now, that’s probably their reason and maybe they’re getting a little bit of bugs finished in the meantime. Anyways, for those of you who are saying you were gonna get it for your birthday, I have a quick and simple solution for you.
Tell your parents that were going to buy it for you to not get anything for your birthday and rather have Sims 3 as your LATE bithday gift. Trust me, it’ll work.

I’ve figured out what to do. Everyone, get with your friends, buy only one copy, and share it. According to the , they’re taking all copy protection off the discs except for the CD key, which basically means it can be installed on an unlimited number of machines. I say, don’t get mad at EA. Get even. If they want to screw us, let’s return the favor. Go out and rip an .iso and burn copies as needed. It’s absolutely illegal, but how is it really ethically any different? They stole 4 months from us. Let’s ding the company for 4 months of income. Easy fix… have your cake and eat it too, folks.
Furthermore, for those of you who preordered, you definitely got screwed. The reason is a simple finance concept called the time-value of money. You’ve got $70 or whatever on deposit with EA and you’re not earning anything on it. You could have it in a basic savings account and be making interest on it. At the very least, as a concession to you guys, EA should give you a discount on your copy of the game to compensate you for having your money. That, IMHO, is pure robbery on their part, but most people don’t think about that and EA knows it, which is why EA gets away with it. If they don’t compensate you (i.e. give you a discount), it’s all the more reason to screw ‘em.
Just my two cents. Oh, and don’t respond telling me that my scheme is illegal. I’m very much aware of that and frankly don’t give a f—.

I SO agree with you. I was so mad because they changed the date more than once. It has no reason to be pushed back. The way I see it, more people may have brought the game if they didnt push the date back. Just imagine, everyone could have the game by now and enjoying themselves and possibly spreading GOOD news about the game. Some good reviews could be in the papers now, it is just ridiculous.

It’s well known that Will Wright (and his team) are perfectionists. The wait for Sims 3 was always going to take longer than any of us wanted, but we’ve always been rewarded for those waits.
Yes, it does suck that customisation has been taken out of the users hands, but was I the only one who got alot of bug issues after downloading usermade things? Possibly was.
I understand the anger at it all, but it’s always going to happen with EA and the Sim games. I know I sound like a fangirl, but to be honest I’ve never been dissappointed with a Sims game yet.Just hope 3 is as good as the rest.

I was thoroughly peeved when I found out about the push back for the release of Sims 3. I too was greatly anticipating this game. I have spent countless hours playing Sims 2 and nearly all of its expansion packs. I was jumping for joy when I heard about Sims 3. Now I’m yawning because I’m being made to wait so EA can create hype for it. Give me a freakin break. You already have a built in fan base EA, stop being greedy and release the damn game so the true FANS can enjoy it!!! I really don’t think sales will increase because of this long wait. I think i would rather wait the extra 3 months to ensure i have a game that is going to run smoothly than get it now and have a game that doesnt run properly and requires patches. Ultimately ITS JUST A GAME, just accept that it is not being released and MOVE ON!

Hey everybody, yesterday, EA released a mini-CAS with a semi-interactive demo, it’s called the SimSocial, it’s pretty fun to create different people with.

Such is the way of the software industry. In case you don’t remember, the release date for Sims 2 was pushed back from March 2004 to August (or was it September?) 2004. Inexplicably (well, at least for those of you who have never worked as software engineers hehehe) postponing the release date is EA’s modus operandi so to spare yourselves from future disappointment, don’t get so worked up about a Sims game until you have a copy of it installed and functional on your computer
I know that this is kinda late, but EA released a full Create-a-Sim Demo and Create-a-House Demo in Target, its only $0.99 US Dollars
The reason for Sims3 havin a delay was because it dint work on all computers, i mean how peed off wud u be if u pre-ordered the sims 3 n it dint work on your computer coz nobody wud actually give it time to be produced propperly, i wud rather hav a game that worked perfectly for ages rather than a game with glitchs,Lag && some stuff like the design features not even working, If you lot were all sales people, u like to hav a good comment of all the people hu buy the thing, Sims is the leading brand and cannot afford to listen to impatient people like some of the people below, just wait like everyone else is doing without moaning!
I had a quick qt… Someone mentioned earlier that we wouldn’t be able to download custom content for the sims 3, is this true??! I love downloading custom content. I love the custom hairs, clothes and make-up i downloaded for the sims 2, and if that is not an option for the sims 3 i don’t know if i would even consider buying it!

The lion’s share of the gaming public doesn’t have a subscription to PC Gamer. As a matter of fact, they need to lure people in who have never before played a computer game if they want to remain on the right side of the balance sheet in the coming years.
