The National Engineers Week Future City Competition is in full swing, with an article in the Las Vegas Sun noting its return to the Northwest Career and Technical Academy this Saturday.
The competition is interesting, since it challenges sixth, seventh and eighth graders to design the "city of tomorrow" by working with engineer mentors. They'll help build a 3D model of a city, write essays, give a presentation and develop their own virtual city using a simulation program.
And the name of that computer simulation? Why, it's 2003's SimCity 4: Deluxe Edition.
Using the game, students must strive to create a city that has a minimum population of 50,000 and a history spanning 150+ years. Zero to three points are awarded for one's performance in 28 objectives spread across the following categories: city layout, services, energy and pollution, and transportation.
Scoring details and rules can be found here. Wish you could participate from the comfort of your home? Owners of SimCity 4: Deluxe Edition can see how well they might have fared by downloading the competition's starter region and then grading themselves. And no, you can't use cheat codes!
