Installing Computer Games

By Courtney Marchelletta, About.com

In order to play a game, you need to install it. What is installation? Basically it's the process of copying game files you need on your hard drive to play it, and creating a registry entry in your computer so it knows it's there. The computer does the hard work, you just tell it where to install the game!

Before You Install
To make sure the game installs correctly, there a few steps you need to take each time you install a new game. Without following these steps, your game may freeze or give you error messages.

Installing Games
Generally the installation process is very simple. When you put the game's CD in, a menu should pop up with the option to install it. Then you follow the instructions, generally clicking the next button a few times, and agreeing to the user agreement. There are some properties you can change, like the file path the game installs to, generally I leave that alone.

After Installing a Game
You may notice that sometimes your games become sluggish, after they once were running great. There are some steps you can take to help your games run better. Some of steps are routine maintenance, while others are things you can do right before you play. Learn how to optimize game performance.
