Before You Buy Your Next Computer Game

By Courtney Marchelletta, About.com

Buying a new game can be a tough decision. There are so many choices, and the pre-release hype makes it more difficult to pick out the best games if you don't want to read the reviews.

Try Before You Buy! Download a Demo

Many developers put out a demo to get people interested in their games. Some of them are playable, and include one mission or level. It's their way of getting you sucked into the game and wanting to play more than one mission. It could just as easily go the other way, and could save you from buying a game you never play.

System Requirements

Read the system requirements carefully. Most of the time the minimum requirements, aren't enough to fully enjoy the game and all the small graphic details. RAM, processor speed, hard drive space, and your video card are factors in game performance.

Get Opinions - Read Reviews, Talk to Friends

Don't judge a game by its cover! Get opinions of people who have played the game. Ask friends, post in the forum, and read reviews. But remember just because one person does not like a game does not mean you won't enjoy it. Read reviews by people you trust. And even if the game gets a bad review, and the interest is still there, give it a try. You may just like it.

Multiplayer Options

A lot of people like games that have multiplayer features. Generally, a game will allow you to connect over a LAN or the Internet. Some games are just more fun playing against others, like Monopoly Tycoon. Not all games are suited for a multiplayer feature. A good game doesn't have to have multiplayer options.

Game Controllers

In most cases, you won't need a game controller. A keyboard and mouse are enough. Some games do have the option to play with a joystick or gamepad, like many flight sims.

Genre

There are many subcategories within the simulation genre. If you are a fan of sim games, chances are you are if you're here, you have your own favorite type of sim game, whether it be a flight sim, a business sim, or a life sim. If one type doesn't interest you, try another. There is something for every personality.
