About Battlefield: 1942 Battlefield: 1942 is a World War II first-person shooter game where players take on the role of one of five different soldiers classes and battle against each other on dozens of different maps and settings from World War II. Released in 2002, it was one of the first games released as primarily a multiplayer game. While multiplayer first-person shooter gameplay is the core component of Battlefield: 1942 it also includes a brief and limited single player campaign which serves as a tutorial. The five classes or roles available include Anti-Tank, Assault, Engineer, Medic and Scout each of which has slightly different capabilities and starting weaponry. These roles are available in each of the five factions that fought during World War II: United States, Soviet Union, Germany, United Kingdom, and Japan. In addition to first-person infantry-style combat Battlefield: 1942 also includes drivable vehicles that can also take part in combat. The game also features two expansion packs which introduced new multiplayer maps, single player storyline, and additional factions. Battlefield: 1942: Road to Rome was released in 2003, adding six maps to the multiplayer action, eight new vehicles and two new factions, France and Italy. The second expansion pack released was Battlefield: 1942 Secret Weapons of World War II which features a new objective-based gameplay model where players need to complete certain tasks to win the match. The expansion also includes new multiplayer maps and weapons. There is also a fairly active mod community for Battlefield: 1942 which has created custom multiplayer maps, new skins, gameplay tweaks, and full game modifications. Some notable mods include Gloria Victis which adds historical battles from the September Campaign or Invasion of Poland and Forgotten Hope: Secret Weapon which introduces a wide array of new vehicles and weapons. The commercial success and critical acclaim of Battlefield: 1942 helped launch the Battlefield series into one of the best-selling and most popular series of Video games. The series includes more than twenty different titles including full releases, expansion packs, and DLC add-ons. It has not yet returned to its World War II roots, but has branched out from its focus on a modern military theme to a crime based theme with Battlefield: Hardline released in 2015.
