"The Sims" : Motives

Motives are what drives a Sim and dictates their mood.

By Courtney Marchelletta, About.com

There are eight motives that keep a Sim going. When all motives are met, the Sim is in a good mood. Good moods are needed to be successful at work and to socialize longer. The motives are self-explanatory and are generally easy to satisfy. Motive levels can be found by selecting a Sim and clicking on the icon with the masks.

Each motive (Bladder, Hunger, Comfort, Room, Energy, Fun, Hygiene, and Social) all has specific things you can do to raise the level. Some have only a few options. For example, to increase bladder levels, a Sim needs to use the bathroom. While the fun motive can be satisfied by a huge array of objects, such as watching TV or playing basketball.
