Roommates in "The Sims Online"

To be a roomie or not, that is the question!

By Courtney Marchelletta, About.com

After creating a character in “The Sims Online,” modeled after the real version of yourself or somebody you’d like to be, your first inclination may be to buy a property and start building. This is a major decision that you shouldn’t jump in to. Instead, you should roam around the city you’ve selected and check out other people’s properties, get a feel for “The Sims Online,” and meet a few people.

Maxis strongly suggests that you become a roommate. Each property is allowed to have 8 resident Sims. I’m here to tell you, that you don’t have to. It all depends on your goals for the game. If your goal is to make lots of money and have a popular property, maybe becoming a roommate with a property that already has that status isn’t a bad idea. Since if you don’t already have a handful of friends, you may spend many hours sitting by yourself.

On the other hand, if your goal is to simply have fun and meet a few people, maintaining a small residential lot may be a good idea. To make money, you’ll have to visit other lots, as the more people working on the same activity will earn you more money.

The other alternative is to buy a property and then recruit roommates. This will leave you in control, but you’ll have the benefits of other Sims living with you.

Reasons to be a Roommate

  • Expanding property size is considerably cheaper
  • Property will have more chances to be online, hence creating more visitors, raising popularity, and making more money.
  • You’ll have someone to keep you company during the times when you have no visitors.
  • Two (or eight) heads are better than one. They may have ideas that you would have never thought of.

Reasons not to be Roommate

  • They have the ability to decorate and design the house as well. As a control freak, you may not like people tinkering with your home, especially if you are the property owner.
  • Perhaps you may enjoy being alone.
  • You don’t have to share the profits.
  • Some roommates won’t pull their weight, but will still reap the benefits of being your roommate.
  • You may end up not liking your Sim roommates as much as you thought you did.
  • Property owners have more controls than roommates.

Becoming a Roommate

If you do decide to become a roommate with an established property, do not go from property to property begging to be a roommate. Instead, find a property you find comfortable with, and show you are easy going and friendly.

Owning Property

Being a property owner can be a tough job. You’re the only one to keep the property online and must make all the decisions. You can always start as a roommate, and eventually buy a property when you have earned enough money to properly furnish your house.

Just remember, it is a game and have fun.
