"Age of Empires II Gold Edition"

Guide Rating -

A good way to describe "Age of Empires II" is to compare it to "Civilization." The games are very much alike, and if you like one, you probably will like the other. "Age of Empires II" is more about combat and building up your military, unlike "Civilization" that allows you to beat your enemies peacefully if you choose.

Gameplay
Lots of playing options helps make the game more enjoyable, since you aren't stuck in the same routine. In this game you can play multiplayer over a LAN or the internet; or play single player with a choice of playing a random map, a standard or custom scenario. You can learn the basics of the game by playing a campaign with instructions to help you meet the objectives. It is always fun to play against others through the internet, it gives you a break from a smart computer player. Single player games can be challenging and entertaining, especially when you create your own scenario.

To work your way out of the Dark Ages, you'll have to build specific buildings and upgrade units and structures. The main focus is on weapons and military, even though you will have to upgrade the Mill and other nonmilitary buildings (markets, blacksmith, etc.). A technology tree is included. For those of you who have played "WarCraft" you will already have a feel for the game. There are similar goals - create a good military, protect yourself, and become victorious.

The included scenarios are actually quite good and varied. You can play historically accurate scenarios, and perhaps rewrite history. Sure the battles are fun, but my favorite scenario doesn't involve a lot of fighting. It is the Joan of Arc scenario, in which it's your job to safely bring Joan of Arc to the King. Big battles are, of course, fun, but sometimes it's a good change to be able to use strategy without the bloodshed.

Sound
There really isn't too much to say about the sound. It works well, and doesn't have annoying background music. Which is always a plus in my book.

Graphics
The graphics are very pleasing to the eye. You can play the game in 3 different resolutions - including 800 X 600 and 1024 X 768. While the graphics may be great to look at, I would have liked some different levels of zoom and option to rotate the map. The game can be quite gruesome. Tell your villagers to kill the sheep or wild animals and you'll see them slaughtering them. Battles also leave a bloody mess behind. A good reason for the game to be Teen rated.

Conclusion
A common quality about simulation games is addictive play that keeps you glued to the computer. "Age of Empires" is no different. It's a strategic game that will keep you playing "just five more minutes." This game is great for a variety of simulation game fans. For those of who enjoy history, combat, strategy games, and games that keep you on the edge of your seat.
