Drawing inspiration from the fantasy world of Majesty's Ardania, Impire is a dungeon-building game that has you playing as a demon lord that has been transformed into an imp. In order to reclaim his proper form, the demon known as Baal-Abaddon must construct a dungeon to lure in heroes and systematically slaughter them with a variety of traps, spells and minions.

The key attraction for fans of Bullfrog's Dungeon Keeper series (and unlike Kalypso's misguided Dungeons) is Impire's emphasis on designing your dungeon's layout by creating different room types and gruesome traps. Creatures can be recruited and leveled up over time, offering improved equipment to ensure your diabolical orders are carried out with speed and precision. Each time a hero perishes, his or her soul will be left behind, serving as an energy source that can be used to power your dungeon.

Minions can also be ordered to the surface in order to raid different locations for treasure that can be used to expand your underground lair. Impire also makes use of "magical item cards" that are gradually unlocked and can be used to help complete objectives in both the single-player and cooperative campaign. Multiple competitive modes are also included, where players can eliminate rivals in an attempt to be the last dungeon lord left standing.
