Top 6 The Golden Oldies of Sim Games

By Courtney Marchelletta, About.com

Just because a game is old doesn't mean it isn't worth playing! There is something charming and comfortable about the graphics of the early 90s and 80s.

1. "The Oregon Trail"

Civilization 2
In school if we were good, we got to take turns playing "The Oregon Trail" in the afternoon before we left for home. It was always a mad rush, we clocked many hours just watching each other play. The title implies exactly what the game is about. You have to travel the Oregon trail, while hunting for food, buying goods, and trying to keep your family alive.

2. "SimCity Classic"

This is the game that started it all for me. The game is very basic, and has very primitive graphics. However, it's one of those games that I love to go back to. You'll build residential, commercial, and industrial areas without all the options of "SimCity 3000."

3. "SimCity 2000"

For some, this is their favorite version of "SimCity." This game was a great improvement over the classic version. There are more tools and better graphics. But the idea behind the game didn't change at all.

4. "RollerCoaster Tycoon"

Build and design your own theme park and rollercoasters in "RollerCoaster Tycoon." You'll be kept busy for hours waiting for that next ride to be built, remodeling, and playing with ride prices to watch the effects. It will only become dull if you let it. You don't have to love fairs or theme parks to enjoy "Rollercoaster Tycoon."

5. "Age of Empires 2 Gold Edition"

This game revolves around ancient times and military operations. You have a variety of civilizations to chose from, each with their own specialties. As your civilization progresses through time, you'll have more buildings, combat units, and types of warfare available to you. The Gold Edition includes the expansion pack "Rise of Rome."

6. "SimTower"

In this game you build a tower from the ground up, and is surprisingly addicting. Your focus is not on the outside, but the inside. You'll designate commercial areas (restaurants, offices, etc.) and residential areas. You'll also have to find a way for visitors to easy go from place to place.
